STORY:
These goalie pads were game worn by Mike Richter of the New York Rangers. The pads were made by Bauer, model Reactor. Pads have “Mike Richter” stitched on both sides. An incredible pair of goalie pads and an iconic piece of the New York Rangers goaltending history. We were able to photo-match the pads perfectly to Getty Image 97274711, dated November 29, 2001, where Mike Richter is seen celebrating a shutout victory against the Carolina Hurricanes at Madison Square Garden.
The goalie pads originally came from a trainer who worked for the New York Rangers. After examining the pads they were in fact found to be worn by Richter during the 2001-2002 NHL season, as well as the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Anecdotal, we were also told from sources close to the team that Richter had a locker room full of gear that he often alternated between games. He rotated 2-3 sets of gear so they would be dry for the next game.
Mike Richter is considered one of the best and most iconic American born goalie to have played the game. He played his entire National Hockey League career, from 1989 to 2002, with the New York Rangers organization, and led the team to the Stanley Cup in 1994. He also represented the United States in international play on several occasions. Richter was named to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
